Forms, reminiscent of his hometown on the Konkan coastline, would appear and dissolve in a mélange of facets and shafts of colour. One of the more serious abstractionist that India has produced, Adivrekar believed in the greatness of nature and wasn’t afraid to say that his paintings were shaped and influenced by nature. Gopal Adivrekar had an original style – sophisticated in its interplay of light and shadow of terrains from his coastal hometown memories in Konkan have been etched on to the painted surface. There were several facets to Adivrekar’s creativity, which always surfaced through many phases of his art life and he kept subconsciously re-inventing himself through his watercolours.
